Mars is covered in a substance called iron oxide, which gives it a reddish hue. Iron oxide is also responsible for the red color of rust. Over time, Mars’ surface has become rusty due to exposure to the planet’s harsh environment.
Composition of the Planet
The red planet is named for its appearance; it is reddish in color because of the high amount of iron oxide (rust) on its surface. About half of the planet’s surface is covered in this reddish dust, which is also responsible for the planet’s distinctive red sunsets. The rest of the planet’s surface is a lighter orange, brown, or gray color.
